Is annexation the answer for MDUSD?

I received the following today in my email from a friend who received it from a local realtor who's email list she is on. I'm sincerely interested in the thoughts of everyone within the MDUSD as this will affect all of us, no matter what happens:

"Annexation is the Answer

I urge all the folks who worked hard on the Measure D campaign to consider moving forward now with a campaign to annex from the Mt Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD). The goal is to effectively reduce the unmanageable existing size of the MDUSD through annexation of Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek residents within the MDUSD into other adjacent school districts.

Pleasant Hill residents should begin a dialogue with Martinez residents to consider the annexation into the existing Martinez School District. About half of the children in Martinez already attend schools located in Pleasant Hill. It makes sense to consolidate Pleasant Hill and Martinez into one school district.

Walnut Creek residents within the MDUSD should revitalize their campaign to annex into the Walnut Creek School District.

Concord/Clayton and Bay Point residents within the MDUSD should work together to actively support the proposed annexation of Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill into the adjacent school districts. The net result will be a smaller and more manageable MDUSD to ensure the communities of which it serves will receive a quality education experience.

Doing nothing and waiting to cope with the aftermath of draconian state mandated budget cuts is not the answer.

Walnut Creek School Board Says No to Boundary Changes

See the CC Times for the latest on the ongoing story.

http://www.contracostatimes.com/news/ci_10367441

The Walnut Creek School Board voted today to oppose the petition that would transfer several MDUSD schools to the Walnut Creek School District.

The Acalanes School District is voting (tomorrow) Weds (9/3) on their position as Acalanes would be taking on Northgate High should this transfer come to reality. It is said that the Acalanes staff recommendation is that the Acalanes board also oppose the petition/boundary change as well.

So stay tuned as the story develops . . .

From the Times: "The county hearing on the petition will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at Acalanes High School, 1212 Pleasant Hill Road in Lafayette."

So if you are keeping track, the following entities have said no to this transfer/ boundary change:

**City of Concord
**City of Clayton
**MDUSD School Board
**Walnut Creek School Board
**Concord neighborhoods including Walnut Country/The Crossings, Limeridge and Crystyl Ranch have joined to fight the transfer and they even have their own website: http://sos94521.org/index.html
**Acalanes School Board (?)

As advocates for the transfer, the Walnut Creek Schools Together Now site http://www.npft.org/ offers a countdown to the County meeting on their front page and notes the meeting on September 10th is the "most important event of the year."

Celebrate the DAY OF THE TEACHER by fighting for our kids

___________________________________

REMINDER of an event taking place this Wednesday, May 14th at Civic Park in Walnut Creek starting at 4pm (its suggested to arrive by 3:30pm):

MDEA's Mike Noce sent the following:

"Celebrate the DAY OF THE TEACHER by fighting for our kids"

"There will be a press conference /rally at the gazebo in Civic Park located in downtown Walnut Creek. The park is located next to where the old library was .We have Sen. Torlakson, Assemblymember DeSaulnier, Joe Ovick and others speaking. The focus is making our communities aware of the devastating budget cut proposals and their affect on Public Education. We are hoping to motivate our community to contact their local legislators to protect school funding and take a balanced approach to solving the budget problems. We are hoping for a large turnout. We welcome bringing signs to the event. We will also be collecting signatures on a petition and handing out bandaids to symbolize that cuts hurt."

Click on the flyer below (2 pages) for more information as well as suggestions of the kinds of signs you might want to make, creativity is welcome.
