Now, some may say that is good - get back to basics - but the world today is about basics AND MUCH MORE. Can we even pretend to be able to ready our students for the new world of technology ? Have you seen the video Shift Happens, or also called, Did You Know? If you've not yet watched this, you really should. It touches on some interesting facts, just a couple of those are that:
- 25% of India's population with the highest IQ's, is greater than the entire population of the US. It means that India has more honor students , than America HAS kids.
- The Top 10 In Demand Jobs in 2010, didn't exist in 2004. That means we are currently preparing our students now for jobs that don't exist yet. Using technologies not yet invented. In order to solve problems we don't know are problems yet.
So given the future of technology and how quickly the world is changing... how well do you think we're doing? I think I know the answer.
.
This just continues to get worse by the day. How can our own State do this to the children? Another 37 million? I am afraid to watch the news these days.
ReplyDeleteWell at least we didn't waste any money on measure D. 37 - 28 is 9 million. So we would have still been 2 million in the hole.
ReplyDeleteNote to self: oldest child starts kindergarten in 3 years. Need to move no matter what in 2.5 years.
Anon 8:04,
ReplyDeleteBy your tone of voice I can assure you that you will not be missed.
You should not be surprised by this.Look back over the past few years. The worst is yet to come.
ReplyDeletewhat is the district's total budget? if they cut 30 million over the last 3 years and now 37 over the next 3 years.. is that even 1/2 the budget yet?
ReplyDeleteEveryone should stay positive, no matter what! It's possible that things could change for the better. Remember "Yes we can!!" It's always darkest before the dawn.
ReplyDeleteOne does have to wonder if we can slice approx 70 million from our budget in just 6 years, and still be operating, I'd say that probably this system needed to be overhauled anyway! Perhaps now some creative and innovative thinkers will emerge as to ways to do more with less. I am looking forward to a "lean and mean" school district, and will work every way I can to be sure the kids have what they need. I do think sports, music and libraries are part of that, so perhaps as parents, we should think of foundations to fund better programs than what is being allocated. Perhaps its time to take back some of the control we've given away and fight for what we want to have our kids to have. Anyway, that's my thought. I'm ready for the challenge and we'll see how this shakes out.
ReplyDeleteWell said. Thank-you Cathy.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Cathy, I agree with you. I am over my pity party and ready to give and get in there and help more. We only have 2 years left in MDUSD but will do everything we can for future students too. I am starting by giving $99 to our MDUSD. Read about a great parent from YVHS on the MDUSD blog who is suggesting we all give. If we work together just think what can be accomplished!

Cathy, you should contact the Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education and see if they need any more board members-- I think they are looking for fresh "blood!"
ReplyDeleteThis is not a problem at the district level. While I will attend the Board of Ed meeting tonight, I think really we need to get a busload of parents to head up and march at Sacramento!!
Anon 4:02, if I thought it would help, I'd go to Sacramento. I would probably rather work on getting a foundation started in my own city :) THanks for thinking of me for PH though ;)
